Well, southern bluefin tuna is already listed as being critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, but that hasn’t led to it being protected. There was a proposal at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species back in March to ban fishing of the fish, but only 20 countries voted for it with 68 voting against. If it was placed on the Endangered Species List it might get some protections, although it’s such a commercial product that’s unlkiely to happen.
