McDonalds is by no means an environmental business model, and waste is probably the biggest issue. The amount of waste produced by this international fast food giant has stirred up so much controversy that over the past year the company has made some significant changes to assuage many of the concerns, particularly with their cups and wrappers. They still have a long way to go, but reducing the amount of raw materials used for packaging and by taking extra steps to recycle materials is helping. The company is also beginning to build “green” restaurants, the first of which is located in Cary, NC.
Another big issue with McDonald’s and other fast food companies is deforestation. A lot of fast food companies are clearing out wooded areas and using them as land for animal grazing (to mass produce burgers worldwide, you need a lot of meat ).
