Packaging waste is a large problem with meat manufacturing. Another issue is fertilizer and waste runoff from the chicken coops where they are grown in mass quantities. This seeps into the water system and has adverse effects on the ecosystem within the waterways. That problem is a major issue with the chesapeake bay, as many chickens are produced in MD and DE for the purdue plant located nearby in Salisbury, MD. so in terms of direct environmental damage, growing the chickens themselves is harmful to the environment, and after the meat is consumed the packaging is tossed into a landfill, thus harming the environment further due to decay time.
