Well, if you are looking at sheer barrels lost in a single oil spill, nothing even comes close to the Kuwaiti oil fires of 1991 where there were estimated losses of 1 to 1.5 BILLION (billion with a “b”) barrels lost. However, if you’re looking at aquatic oil spills, as these often wreak much greater havoc on local ecosystems, the Lakeview Gusher spill that took place between 1910 and 1911 spilled an estimated 9 million barrels. To give you some perspective on both these numbers, the recent Deepwater Horizon spill has been put at around 570,000 barrels, in terms of total net loss.
Actually the commonly accepted total volume from Deepwater Horizon is 4.9 million barrels.
