Mercury oxide batteries are considered to be one of the most dangerous ones, to the point of being banned in many countries. In United States, they are banned except for the small button batteries by the Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act of 1996. Mercury contained in them is poisonous to people and many species, and so poses a danger to the environment if disposed of improperly (i.e. thrown out with regular garbage instead of as toxic waste).
