After some digging, evidently in 1901, eleven young boys were killed during a lightning storm in Chicago, and one suffered major injuries. All were taking refuge from the storm near a dock and were systematically electrocuted. Although this a relatively old story, the highest death ration due to lightning strikes in the United States is in Florida, where hurricanes and storms run rampant all year. The USA averages about 73 deaths a year due to lightning strikes, and are generally just one person at a time, with the exception of the example listed above.
