Hydroelectric dams have recently been criticized by scientists because of the significant amount of carbon dioxide and methane they produce. The amount of carbon emissions vary between dams. Tropical countries tend to rely more heavily on hydroelectricity than other countries; the Curuá-Una dam in Brazil was found to release more than three and a half times the amount of greenhouse gas emissions than electricity produced by oil would have. Plans for another hydroelectric dam in Brazil, which will be the third largest in the world, have recently been announced.
