Vampire appliances can account for 5 to 25% of lost or wasted energy in the home. This also translates to wasted money for the consumer and added pressure on energy grids. Computers left in sleep mode can waste up to $41 dollars worth of energy per year. TVs, DVD players and VCRs can waste $9 or $10 each. Companies such as Apple have begun to list product statistics on energy usage and are focused on creating less vampirelike products. Shutting computers down for nights and weekends is still the best balance to manage computer energy use. Also, using smart power strips and unplugging any appliances with clock features limits energy waste.
