In 2003, Dzerzhinsk, Russia was named the most chemically polluted city in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records. A former Soviet Union chemical waste site, 300,000 tons of chemical waste was improperly dumped. The death rate in the city is 260% higher then the birth rate. Two very dangerous chemicals, phenols and dioxin are reported at 17 million times the safe limit.
