The world’s largest laser is owned by the National Ignition Facility, who are using it to attempt to cause hydrogen atoms to produce net energy gain, by effectively creating a small artificial sun.
The largest laser, which costs $3.5 billion dollars, belongs to the Department of Energy, and is designed to simulate the energy of a nuclear explosion. After more than a decade, that included several delays and cost overruns (it was initially supposed to cost $700 million), the world’s most powerful laser has been certified by the DOE and is ready to begin experiments, some of which physicists hope could lead the way to fusion energy.
