What will the new fuel economy standards mean for auto makers?

The new fuel standards say that the annual fuel consumption in America needs to go down five percent between 2017 and 2025. Though the auto companies have already been required to make changes by 2016 the changes will continue on for the nine years after. The goal will be to make the cars more efficient and encourage carpooling as a way to meet the new gas standards. This is higher than the three percent cut that industries wanted but also works to keep environmentalists, who wanted a higher number, happy. The sustainability industry is expected to bring in 603,000 jobs to Americans by 2030 so the financial difficulties of cutting 5% of fuel use will be worth it financially and environmentally.
