What will happen if our calculations of when we hit peak oil are off?

If we calculate that we haven’t hit peak oil yet, then the price of oil will be a shock to consumers. Once peak oil is passed, oil becomes increasingly scarce and prices are driven up. This change may come as a shock if predicted at the wrong time, and it may encourage consumers to push for faster reforms in the energy industry. However, I doubt our supply of oil will be significantly affected. The price tag, however, will change.
