There is the potential for many different scenarios. But first off, the cost of oil–and therefor oil based products– will continually rise. This is not to say that there will not be cost fluctations based on immediate supply and demand issues, but the overall trend of the cost of oil will steadily rise since the volume of oil extracted will be getting smaller and smaller. This will impact everything from transportaion, to food production to heating. There is the potential for rapid change–wherein people continue to maintain the same lifestyles to the point where there is a quic dry-up of petroleum; there is also the potential for weaning ourselves off of oil so that society actually uses less and as a result will not feel the impacts as dramatically.
