Dry chemical fire extinguishers are filled with a foam or powder made out of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), potassium bicarbonate, and are pressurized with nitrogen.  Baking soda decomposes at 158 degrees Fahrenheit and that process releases carbon dioxide which will smother the fire.
