Whale blubber can be melted down into oil, it can be used for making soap, wax, lubricants, pet food…the list goes on. It is used in the same ways that other types of fat are used today.
In the whale, the blubber is used as insulation against the frigid temperatures of the water. More blubber is generally seen in whales that live in colder climates. Other animals such as walruses and seals also use blubber for the same reason.
