What is a weta?

If you’re looking for a type of animal, a weta can refer to any of several very strange-looking species of insect, somewhat similar to crickets. Nocturnal and with a variety of diets, they are native to New Zealand, although fossils of the creatures have been found all over the southern hemisphere. They are grouped into several categories: the giant weta, which can grow up to 8 inches including the legs; the tree weta; the tusked weta, whose large tusks are for male competition; the ground weta; and the cave weta, also known as a camel cricket.

“WETA” is also the call letters of a popular NPR news/classical music station here in the DC area.
