What were victory gardens used for?

    United States citizens were encouraged to plant gardens to support the war efforts of WWI and WWII.  It was a way to get communities and families to due their duty at home while the soldiers were away at war.  In 1943, almost one third of the vegetables consumed in the US were produced from over 20 million victory gardens.
