A water footprint is similar to a carbon footprint in that it represents an amount that is negatively impacting the environment. How it differs though, is that carbon footprinting measures an output and water footprinting represents an amount consumed. So while your car’s carbon footprint may be however many thousands of pounds of carbon it emits annually, it’s water footprint would be how much water it uses and consumes annually. For example, taking longer showers in the morning would increase the size of your water footprint as you are using more and increasing the amount that you use/consume.
