I think the disaster that you are asking about was the spill of 1 million cubic meters of red sludge. This toxic spill ruined two Hungarian villages, killed people, and chemically burned hundreds of people. The red sludge was the waste product from an aluminum processing plant. The reservoir broke and flooded the surrounding areas until it reached the Danube River. Scientists say that the metals were so diluted by the time it reach the river that there should be very low levels of contamination. Footage of this spill can be found all over the internet.
