What was the purpose of BP drilling the relief well?

In essence, relief wells ‘relieve’ the pressure on previously drilled wells.  This was useful due to the concern of immense pressure on the cap placed over the leaking well.  Relief wells are drilled as deeply as possible and are designed to intersect the oil flow and original well to alleviate the oil pressure on the leaking well.
