Unfortunately, I think the most important piece of environmental legislation was detrimental to the environment. I only call it environmental legislation because of the direct effect it has had on the environment. The Bush-Cheney Energy Bill of 2005 caused a great delay in the development of cleaner energy technologies while providing subsides and incentives for industries that are harm the environment (coal, oil, natural gas) or are controversial (nuclear energy). Additionally, this bill deregulated government protection to create unabated and invasive natural gas exploration which has caused significant damage to Midwest state aquifers.
Though this bill was not good for the environment, it has taken it toll on it and changed the face of the energy industry for years to come.
