    The most catastrophic tornado was the Tri-State Tornado in 1925, which touched down for over three hours in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. It set records for speed and path length. The worst devastation was in Illinois–the town of Gorham was destroyed and 25 deaths occurred in three schools in Murphysboro.
