Actually, new wells are being drilled in the gulf right now. Besides the two relief wells being drilled around the leaking Deepwater Horizon well to relieve the pressure, a permit was granted at the beginning of June for a shallow water well 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Particularly as this well is just south of the Rockefeller State Wildlife Refuge and Game Preserve, environmentalists are concerned and angry about it. Deepwater wells are still banned.
In June 2010, according to World Oil, 20 rigs were operating in the offshore (1 in CA, the rest in the Gulf of Mexico). That is down from 48 in May 2010 and 46 in June 2009.
