Until recently, there had been no new orders for nuclear plants since 1977. The last plant ordered before then, the Watts Bar plant, was completed in 1990 and went online in 1996.
Now, concerns about carbon emissions are making nuclear power seem like an attractive option. The Department of Energy has set aside $54 million in loan guarantees for the construction of nuclear power plants. In February, President Obama announced that $8.3 million of that money would help fund two new reactors in Georgia.
