The peregrine falcon was the first animal on the list when it was started in 1973. The falcon has since gone on to become a poster child for the effectiveness of the list, though some have argued that the falcon’s recovery is due mainly to the governmental ban on DDT (the pesticide which was weakening the shells of these birds’ eggs). There are competing lists of endangered species — the peregrine was the first on the US’s official list.
The endangered species list was started in 1967 and included 14 mammals, 36 birds, 6 reptiles and amphibians and 22 fish. Among these animals is the grizzly bear, the Florida panther, and the blackfooted ferret. For a complete list check out the citation.
