The first state to ratify the US Constitution, thereby making it an official state of the United States of America was Delaware on December 7, 1787. Technically, 13 states were considered part of the US when they signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. However, Delaware was the first to actually become a part of the Union as mandated by the US Constitutuion.
