As far as I can tell, it was probably the Edible Schoolyard, a one acre garden and kitchen classroon established by the Chez Panisse Foundation (an offshoot of the restaurant) at the Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley, California in 1995. Since then, both offshoots of the original Edible Schoolyard and similar programs have spread all over the country and even the world, as school districts decided to provide their students with fresh produce the students themselves grew.
