The first working robot joined GM’s Ewing Township plant in 1961.  Joseph F. Engelberger developed this Ternstedt die-cast robot.  The robot used a steel armature to drop hot car parts into a cooling bin.  Working nonstop for ten years, the Ternstedt now rests at the Smithsonian Institution.
