The first successful organ transplant occurred on Dec. 23, 1954, in Boston.  Doctors transplanted a kidney to a seriously ill, 23-year-old man, donated from his identical twin brother.  Ronald Herrick was a healthy 23-year-old who had just been discharged from the Army. His twin brother Richard had just gotten out of the Coast Guard and was dying of kidney disease.  The operation was a success and within 10 months, both brothers were back to full health.
