    The first modern oil well was drilled in 1848 on the Aspheron Peninsula, in Baku, Azerbaijan, by F.N. Semyenov, a Russian engineer.

    The first offshore drilling recorded in history was in Bibi-Eibat field in Baku in 1846, then Russian territory. However the first commercial offshore oil well was Summerland Oil Field off the coast of California. That was in 1896.
