Before there were mints to mass produce coins and paper money people used other items as currency. Before the concept of money came along our ancestors bartered what they had, be it a cow or clothing. In China at about 1200 BC, there is evidence that cowry shells were used as money. By 1000 BC however, they made replica cowry shells from metal and used that as currency.
