The first cruise, as we understand the term today, was on a ship that originated from America in 1867 (Mark Twain was a passenger!). However, the first ship built specifically for cruises was the Prinzession Victoria Luise of the Hamburg America Line. The ship was launched on June 29, 1900 and was accidentally grounded and retired off Jamaica on December 16, 1906.
Oh, excuse my mis-typing. The name of the ship was Prinzessin Victoria Luise.
