The first city was that of the Sumerians, Sumer. Residing in the cradle of civilization, between the Tigiris and Euprates, in modern day Iraq.
Sumer was not actually the name of a Sumerian city. The Sumerian civilization’s first city is generally though to be Uruk, a settlement which grew into a city in the fourth century BCE. Uruk’s population reached 50,000 people around 3000 BCE, making it probably the largest city in the world at the time.
There are large settlements that predate Uruk, but archaeologists disagree over whether they can truly be considered “cities”.
