What was the first biotech crop grown commercially on U.S. soil?

Monsanto is responsible for the first biotech crops in the US, which happened in the 1990s.  Corn and soy are two big crops that are grown from genetically modified seeds.  Monsanto does not allow farmers to save seeds for the following year, claiming that they own the seed since they patented it.

The first biotech crop approved for sale in the US (in 1994) was the Flavr Savr tomato produced by a company called Calgene. Unfortunately, the tomatoes cost more to produce than people were willing to pay for them and the product was eventually discontinued and Calgene ended up getting bought out by Monsanto.
