Sheep were the first animal to be domesticated for food. This took place in the Middle East between 9000 and 7000 BCE. This has been proved by the presence of sheep bones in a settlement in Shanidar (present day northern Iraq). Cattle and pigs were domesticated by 7000 BCE. The Ox was most likely domesticated in western Asia first and the pig probably in China. The animals were not only used as a source of food, but also for manure, leather, wool, weaponry, candles and glue.
