The National Police Agency of Japan released a report today (Sept. 30, 2011) listing the official death count as 15,815 with an additional 3,966 people missing. If you assume all 3,966 of the missing are dead, that would make a total of 19,781 casualties. However, in May The Washington Times reported that many Japanese have been claiming that the official figures (which were also around 15,000 at that time) are too low. One town alone claims that they lost or are missing 9,000 people. The Japanese government has also suggested its numbers might be incorrect, saying that counting the dead was not its top priority in the aftermath and chaos of the earthquake.
