The Fresno Sanitary Landfill (FSL) was not only the oldest landfill in California, but the oldest in the country.  FSL opened in 1937 and closed in 1987 due to concerns about methane gas  the creation by the site.  The site was designated as a national superfund site in 1989, just two yeas after closing.
