The atmosphere slowly evolved from a mixture rich in methane, ammonia, sulfur, hydrogen, water and neon, with volcanoes injecting these gases into the atmosphere. Unicellular organisms known as cyanobacteria slowly produced oxygen in the atmosphere converting CO2 and H2O into oxygen.
The chemical compostion of our current atmosphere is 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, .03% Carbon dioxide with the addition of other gasses.
