What was the amazon like before deforestation?

    Many more trees, and much bigger trees. Swaths of rain forest frontier have been cut and cleared in the past 100 years or so. Old growth rain forest can take 100 years to get to full size, so the effects of deforestation can be lengthy. The image below reveals the recovery progression after a rain forest is cut and burned:

    You can see how long the recovery takes. 7 million square kilometers of South American forest have been cut, to give you an idea of the extent.
