The war most famous for using poison gases is the World War I. It saw the first major as well as largest use of a variety of chemical agents, such as phosgene, mustard gas, and chlorine. About 85,000 deaths and 1,176,500 casualties are attributed to poison gases used by both the Allies and the Axis powers in WWI. There have been uses in other conflicts, but not on this scale.
