Vertical farming is essentially farming that expands up as opposed to out. Instead of being farmed in the open air, the crops would be farmed in an environmentally friendly skyscraper. This would allow a 18 story building to feed a town of 50,000. Land is running out and it would help the growing demand of food.
Vertical farming is a proposed way to farm in urban centers. Farming would take place in skyscrapers. Proponents of this idea say that it could help to stop global warming by reducing the cost of transporting food to urban centers and by letting traditional outdoor farming areas become natural habitats again. However, the energy that would be needed for lighting and other needs to make vertical farming feasible could outweigh the benefits.
