In Washington, littering with burning debris such as cigarette butts, or other potentially dangerous litter, can land you with a $1,000 fine, and for littering in large amounts the fines go up to $5000. But for regular litter such as wrappers or cans, fines generally seem to be about $500 around the country for a first offense, and higher for second and third offenses. It can also carry up varying amounts of jail time.
