Government in the US, both on a state and federal level, have put into place ton of regulation on cars and industry that are making a difference in air quality. There are ton of tax break incentives to buy new efficient appliances and hybrid vehicles, and even if you don’t buy new there are still strict regulation in place for emissions from cars, like smog tests, and regulations on fireplaces and when you can burn outdoors. There have also been lots of regulations put on factories and refineries, which make a huge difference because industrial emissions is the biggest emitter. But air quality is improving.
