Types of environmental laws include protecting natural spaces, Agricultural Law, Animal Law, Energy, Equine Law, Forestry and Fisheries, Natural Resources, and Oil and Gas Law. Some environmental international treaties include: Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), Kyoto Protocol, Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, U.S. Environment Laws and Treaties, UN Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC), and Vienna Convention to Protect the Ozone Layer.
Legislation that is being debated right now to ‘cap and trade’ carbon emissions could do much to help the environment by putting a ceiling on the amount of carbon emissions that a nation can have. It will be important to pass legislation and incentives that promote green innovation as well. Also, it will be important to end the subsidy on corn to make it wiser to produce other types of food because so much of our diet is currently corn. Many people have opposition to any legislation in a free market but there are so many problems right now that legislation may be one of the only resolutions.
