Nitrogen Oxides and Volatile Organic Carbons (VOCs) are most harmful to the environment. Nitrogen Oxides are precursors to tropospheric Ozone, which is harmful to both the atmosphere (photochemical smog) as well as to human health. VOCs (including Methane, a greenhouse gas) are also important in the tropospheric production of Ozone and photochemical smog.
