There are more than one type of deer in California. The California Mule deer is a prominent deer species that lives in the Sierra Nevadas and in more hill and mountain climates. There are also black-tailed and white-tailed deer in California as well. The biggest distinction of the mule deer is that its antlers grow and split upwards instead of forwards. Black-tail deer are the most popular game animal in California.
There are six species of deer generally found in California. The Columbian black-tailed deer, the California mule deer, the Rocky Mountain mule deer, the southern mule deer, the Inyo mule deer, and the burro deer.
White-tailed deer are actually not found in California and many of the western United States. They generally reside east of the Rockies.
