Just as is the case with most areas, Solar power is the the most producing form of energy in the United States. The expenses of equipment and maintenance of solar cells is what keeps the form of energy from being widespread.
What the US may be capable of (in the future) may be debatable. What the US can produce now (capacity), from renewable sources, is very much dominated by hydropower first (7% of total electricity), wind second, biomass third, geothermal fourth, and solar fifth (less than 1%).
