Currently, the most commonly expanding and researched renewable energy source is solar energy. Since common solar panels are only able to convert a small amount of photon energy into usable energy, they are not nearly as efficient as we’d like them to be. Wind turbines are currently being built the fastest (increasing by about 30% each year) since they are extremely efficient at producing energy as they are now.
It depends on what you consider renewable energy. We are using a lot of biomass for the nations energy supply (thanks to ethanol). We also have quite a bit of hydroelectric power. Nuclear, although not truly renewable, produces significantly more energy than the other two combined. Finally, we also produce small amounts of wind, geothermal, and solar energy. In that order.
