There are quite a few different types of insects that are attracted to Japanese Maples. Aphids, scale insects, and borers (or various larvae of sawflies, beetles, and moths) can attack the tree, and have destructive effects on it.
In terms of fungus, there are also a few varieties that affect the Japanese Maple. Anthracnose, Shoestring Root Rot, and Verticillium Wilt are the names of a few.
