At Pebble Beach golf course two different types of grass are used. Poa annua is used on the greens. Rye grass is used on the fairways and tees.
While thought of as a weed in 15 states, Poa annua grass can be lush because it forms large mats of green grass tufts. However, if not taken care of properly, it can go yellow, which makes it undesirable for use in hotter states.
Rye grass is fast growing and prolific and acts as a great erosion barrier.
